Sally J. Smart, 72, of Janesville, Wisconsin, passed away from natural causes on July 9, 2026. Sally was born on April 10, 1954, in Mauston, Wisconsin, to Eugene Charles and Viola Mae (Blackburn) Smart. She was the youngest of eight children and remained close to her family throughout her life.
After graduating from Mauston High School in 1972, Sally received her BS in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. She began her career in wastewater treatment before joining Lab Safety, which was later acquired by Grainger. She remained with the company until she retired in 2025 after a long career in laboratory and industrial safety.
Family was an important part of Sally’s life. She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews and, later, their children. Whether planning a family outing, celebrating birthdays and holidays, or finding the perfect Christmas gift, Sally enjoyed creating memories with the people she loved.
She also treasured the friendships she developed over the years. Her career introduced her to many lifelong friends whose companionship and support became an important part of her life.
Outside of work, Sally enjoyed taking on projects. One of her greatest accomplishments was restoring a Victorian home in Earlville, Illinois. She carefully renovated the home over several years, even incorporating maple flooring salvaged from a local high school gymnasium into the restoration.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Kenneth, William, and James Smart; and her sisters, Jennifer Seaman and Bette Smart.
She is survived by her brothers, Gerald “Jerry” (Mary Ann) Smart, Machesney Park, Illinois and Robert “Bob” Smart, Thonotosassa, Florida; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sally will be remembered for the time she shared with others, the friendships she valued, and the many memories she created with family throughout her life.
Per Sally’s wishes a private family burial was held in Mauston, Wisconsin on July 21, 2026.
Donations in memory of Sally can be made to the American Heart Association and the Janesville Public Library.
