Ronald J. Schmidt, age 78 of Madison, passed away at his home on June 6, 2026, after a long battle with dementia. Ron was born June 10, 1947, in Portage, Wisconsin to William and Mabel (Lee) Schmidt. William passed away in 1951 when Ron was 4 years old.
Ron graduated from East High School in 1966 and was drafted into the U.S. Army soon after graduation and did a tour in Vietnam. Ron worked for Oscar Mayer.
Ron had many annual fishing trips to Canada with good friends, and to Green Bay with Mike Fiegel and Steve Dorn. He enjoyed many seasons of hunting, fast pitch softball leagues and occasional trips to the casino.
Ron is survived by his wife, Paulette (Dorn) Schmidt, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Together they created a home of love and devotion to their four children, Dave (Deb) Schmidt, Randy (Kaitlin) Schmidt, Dan Schmidt, and Brian (Emily) Schmidt; grandchildren, Michael, Dylan, Nathan, Ashlynn, Kelsey, and Easton; and great-grandsons, Zacory, Kingston and Wayne. Ron is further survived by a brother, Bill Schmidt; nieces, Laurie Briggs and Sharon (Dale) Raney; nephews, Jason (Katie), Kyle (Amy), and Corey Schmidt; in-laws, Sheila Cheetham, Tom and Toni Dorn, and Steve and Becky Dorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mabel; his brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Betty Schmidt; and a special nephew, Michael Schmidt. Also, Paulette’s father, Robert Dorn, mother and stepfather, Sylvia and Roy Bartels; and brother-in-law, Jack Cheetham.
Thank you to everyone who offered prayers, kindness, and support during this difficult time. Especially Agrace Hospice, Brian, Emily, Susie, and Laurie.
Rest in Peace Ron. We love you and will miss you always.
