Ronald Schmidt, 78, of Madison passed away on June 6, 2026 at home after a long battle with dementia. Ron was born June 10, 1947 in Portage, Wisconsin to William and Mabel (Lee) Schmidt. William passed away in 1951 when Ron was 4 years old.
Ron graduated from East High School in 1966 and was drafted into the Army soon after graduation and did a tour in Viet Nam. Ron worked for Oscar Mayer.
Ron had many annual fishing trips to Canada with good friends, and to Green Bay with Mike Friegel and Steve Dorn. He enjoyed many seasons of hunting, fast pitch softball leagues and occasional trips to the casino.
Ron is survived by his wife, Paulette (Dorn) Schmidt with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Together they created a home of love and devotion to their 4 children; Dave (Deb) Schmidt, Randy (Kaitlin) Schmidt, Dan Schmidt, and Brian (Emily) Schmidt. Grandchildren: Michael, Dylan, Nathan, Ashlynn, Kelsey, and Easton. Great Grandsons: Zacory, Kingston and Wayne. Ron is further survived by a brother Bill Schmidt, nieces Laurie Briggs and Sharon (Dale) Raney, nephews: Jason (Katie), Kyle (Amy), and Corey Schmidt, in-laws: Sheila Cheetham, Tom and Toni Dorn, and Steve and Becky Dorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Mabel, his brother and sister in law Jerry and Betty Schmidt, and a special nephew Michael Schmidt. Also, Paulette’s father Robert Dorn, mother and step father Sylvia and Roy Bartels.
Thank you to everyone who offered prayers, kindness and support during this difficult time. Especially Agrace Hospice, Brian, Emily, Susie and Laurie.
Rest in Peace Ron. We love you and will miss you always.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date, to be determined.
