Janice R Macek, 81, of Janesville, Wisconsin, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in her home in Janesville after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Jan was born in Yankton, SD, on April 9, 1945, to Albert and Alma (Lewis) Mueller. She was the oldest of five children and grew up on a farm in Crofton, NE, where she learned many skills that she carried throughout her life.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Mount Marty College, in Yankton. She met her husband John at work at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, MO, and later worked at Johnson County Bank, Comerica Bank, and finally at the Midland County Health Department in Midland, MI.
Jan was a longstanding member of the Nativity of Mary parish in Janesville, where she made some of her closest friends while decorating the church, sewing vestments and reconstructing the Marian shrine. Jan enjoyed many hobbies and filled her home with handmade quilts and lovingly restored and reupholstered furniture and decorated her walls with elaborate stencils. Her flower garden and pond were a beautiful background to many gatherings of family and friends. Jan was active in her local PEO chapter and was invited to speak to them about her battle with cancer a few months before her passing. She spoke at length about the love and support of her family and said afterwards that she had “never been hugged so many times in her life”.
She survived her husband of 45 years, John Macek, who passed away in 2014.
She is survived by her son Bryan Macek (Stephanie) of Rochester Hills, MI; her daughter Sarah Gagnon (Jeff) and granddaughter Claire of Norway, MI; her son Curtis (Kaila) and granddaughter Alice of Janesville, WI; her sister Patsy (David) of Peoria, IL; her brother Jerome (Bev) of St. Helena, NE; and her brother Danny (Kim) of Yankton, SD. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Shari Bauder (Duane).
A Funeral Mass will be held on July 21, 2026 at 11:00 am at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in Janesville, Wisconsin. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am at the church.
