Delores E. (Coulthard) Smith, 62, of Janesville, passed away at Mercy Hospital ICU on May 15, 2026 with family members and close friends at her bedside.
Delores was born to Lewis R. Coulthard and Judith A. (Mallwitz) Stowe on October 4, 1963. She was a lifelong resident of Janesville, Wisconsin, graduating from Janesville Craig High School. On September 6, 1983, she married Cary M. Smith.
Delores’s career life began in the early 1990s after receiving her associate degree in Legal Secretarial Science from Blackhawk Technical College. Soon after, she became employed at Rock County, working in several capacities beginning as a Clerk III for Human Services; Administrative Assistant for Mental Health and the Juvenile Justice Division under the direction of Robert (Bob) Sperling; Clerical Services Supervisor until the position was eliminated; Administrative Assistant for Child Protective Services; and lastly, Administrative Assistant for Facilities Management at the Rock Haven Health Care campus.
She retired from Rock County in February 2022 after a 31-year career later picking up a part-time gig job working for Instacart.
Outside of her career, Delores was a vibrant, outgoing, and social soul who treasured time spent with family and friends. She found great joy in experimenting with new recipes, camping, being outdoors in nature, celebrating the holidays, and taking her beloved dog, Max, to the dog park.
A devoted movie enthusiast, Delores loved watching cooking shows, crime dramas, reality TV episodes, Disney films, and movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her remarkable sense of humor and vibrant personality made family gatherings more memorable, whether she was spontaneously singing her “Happy Birthday” song in her signature Ethel Merman-style voice or entertaining everyone with her iconic Axl Rose dance. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
Delores is survived by her husband of 42 years, Cary M. Smith; her sons, Ryan (Donnalle) Smith and Benjamin Smith; brothers Mike (Mary) Coulthard of Janesville, Phillip Coulthard of Beloit; and sister Carol (Greg) Brueggeman of Janesville. She is also survived by her grandson, Phoenyx Hunter Smith; several nieces and nephews: Shawna Brueggeman; Kegan (Liz) Brueggeman; Otis Coulthard; Ashley (Maddie) Rosetti of Beloit; Kyle Calkins; Katie Westerfield of Iowa; Jessica Potts of Milwaukee; sisters-in-law Shari (Jeff) Griffis and Jodi (Mark) Johnson of Iowa; father-in-law Dorne Smith of Iowa; close family friend Chris Staack; and her loving Corgi companion Maxmillion (Max).
