Carmen M. Hewitt

Carmen Mae (Carpenter) Hewitt passed away on August 4, 2026, at the age of 92 after a short illness. Carmen was born in Plymouth, Wis., to James W. and Marian M. (Schlenter) Carpenter on July 6, 1934. She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1952.

She started her career as a secretary at the Stokely Canning Company in Columbus, Wis. It was there at a local basketball game, she met her future husband, Donald Hewitt. They eloped to Dubuque, Iowa on January 2, 1954. Together they raised five children in Columbus.

In 1966 they purchased a full-service filling station in Beaver Dam, where they later built a lakeside home. In addition to being a full-time homemaker, Carmen was also the business bookkeeper and official “gofer” for parts and supplies.

Carmen had varied interests and a joy for learning. She crocheted many baby blankets, read thousands of books, cooked new recipes, dehydrated, learned genealogy, and painted ceramics. She embraced change and adapted well to new technology. She was a proud member of DAR and of both Columbus and Beaver Dam homemaker clubs. But most of all, she enjoyed her family.

She was a loving mother to her children, 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She hosted many family gatherings and holidays. She kept the snack jars full and the cheese sliced, ready for the cracker.

Carmen is survived by her children: Donna Walker, Gary (Marie) Hewitt, Diane Huseboe, and Delores (Ken) Stevens; grandchildren: Leah Walker, Luke Walker, Katie Hewitt, Maggie Hewitt, Jessica (Huseboe) Narva, Matthew Huseboe, Evan Huseboe, Jaslin Huseboe, Jacob Huseboe, Ben Stevens and Adam Stevens. She considered herself lucky to know her nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Marian Carpenter; brother, Lee (Jane) Carpenter; sister, Karen (Roger) Deicher; her husband of 59 years, Don; son, Gregg; sons-in-law, Peter Huseboe and Steven Walker; and grandson, Sean Walker.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at ALL FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4058 Lien Rd., Madison. The visitation will be held at 1 p.m. with a short service beginning at 2 p.m. Any memorials may be directed towards the charity of your choice.

The family would also like to acknowledge her dear friendships with Cathie and Lynn, and her granddaughter Leah, who was her rock.
